This lovely bone and bamboo mahjong set features a One Bam bird perching on a branch.

Attention was given to depicting the different feather patterns. You can clearly see the claws holding onto the branch, and a graceful twig echoing the curve of the bird. The other Bams are of the barbed variety and here  they are much more sturdy looking than others. Notice the number of strokes used to make each Bam. There is something that always delights on this type of 8 Bams.

The Craks have elaborate wans, and green Arabic numbers.

The One Dot is the flower within a flower, with the outer flower looking like a sunflower, and the other Dots continue the flower pattern. The 2 Dot has eight petals and the rest of the Dots have six. Note the Arabic 5 is carved with a unique style, and the One Dot has a red number and the others have blue ones. This same arrangement is seen on the One Bams. We have seen this on other sets too.

The Winds, Dragons and Flowers will be shown tomorrow.

A reader sent these photographs of this very lovely thick bone set.

You will quickly note the absence of any Arabic numbers or Western indices. This set was not intended for export, so adding foreign letters and numbers was not deemed necessary. The designs are clean (as are the tiles!)  All three suits have the ornate style of engraving.

The One Bamboo bird is particularly lovely, and unusual with the yellow paint around its neck.

The Flower tiles have been translated by Ray Heaton:

Top row: Smoke or mist, large waves, North (you can recognize that symbol from the Wind tiles) and Ocean. This could mean there is an ocean with large waves to the North of this peaceful lake.

Bottom Row: Lake, West (you know this one from the Winds), scenery, beautiful. This could mean the scenery is beautiful on West Lake.

I love the details seen in this set. The carvings on the tree branches, indicating many different types of trees, birds flying through the air, little dots of color representing flowers, and the boats seen in the top row, with the delightful glimpses of the sailboat and the row boat coming into view around rock ledges. A fisherman is seen at work, and the water reflects both his image as well as that of the boat. There is something very peaceful about the scenes here, very much like those in landscape paintings.

Here is a link to information about this lake, which has inspired writers and artists throughout the years. If you look at the map you will see the ocean is to the North.

The brass box with 5 drawers, tiles and wood racks
The brass box with 5 drawers, tiles and wood racks. Often a drawer would be used for counting/betting sticks, dice and mings which indicate wind direction.

This delightful brass box holds an equally lovely set of Mahjong tiles. The panel which forms the front of the box has a man in a boat, similar to those often seen on some Chinese Bakelite Flower tiles. The wood racks were early versions and were only used to keep a player's Mahjong tiles secret; when a tile was called, that grouping would be placed on the tabletop.

Note the lovely flowers seen on the back of this box. As in many very expensive sets, this box was designed to have all its sides seen. The box handles are very heavy, giving an important look to the box.

Unusual Flower tiles and soaring swallow One Bam
Unusual Flower tiles and Soaring Swallow One Bam

The Flower tiles on this set feature modes of transportation and types of buildings. The unusual One Dots have linear interiors, and the others are circles within circles. The Bams are of the simple rod type. One of the Flowers features a man in a boat, similar to the one seen on the front panel of the box. The tiles are in exceptional condition, with few of the streaks often seen in the bone and bamboo sets. The counting sticks are smooth, unlike the more ragged appearance of those in less expensive sets.

folk art Flowers
folk art Flowers

These delightful Mahjong Flowers seem like folk art to me. They are well carved, but the images are very simple. Although it is hard to know exactly what birds and bugs are seen on the tiles, there is a very faintly visible butterfly on the Red 1, more visible on the Red 2. Birds appear on the Blue 1 and 3 and Red 3 and perhaps 4. I must confess, I love the Blue and Red 4s, although I have no idea what insects or creatures they are!
